ABOUT CHRIS COOKE:
I spend each summer painting en plein air along the rocky coast of Maine. My studio is located in South Portland, Maine in a 230 year old farmhouse. In the winter, I head to the charming, beautiful and endearingly eccentric city of Savannah, Ga. Savannah is a city for artists and it was here that I began my very first painting. I’ve taken many workshops over the years but am mainly self-taught. I paint still lifes and landscapes in oil, almost always from direct observation. My process begins with a delicate muted underpainting, followed by careful paint mixing and thin paint application, followed by some wiping, scraping, squinting, switching to a palette knife, .some dabs and blobs, more wiping, switching of music from Mozart to Abba, ruining of pricey brush, splilling of mineral spirits, lovely but accidental mark making, one last addition of paint, scraping off last addition of paint, stopping at an interesting place.
I hope you enjoy the viewing as much as I enjoy the making! Thank you for visiting my site!
